Gabriel Fauré's lovely, simple Berceuse in D major opus 16 was written in 1879 a few years after the composer had finished his masterly First Violin Sonata. This gentle French piece is in the same vein of lyrical sweetness as the Méditation from Massenet's Thaïs.
