Description

Beyond Heaven's Gates werd in gecomponeerd in opdracht van Derwent Brass en hun dirigent Keith Leonard om het 25-jarig jubileum van de band te vieren. Het stuk, gecomponeerd in drie delen, opent met trillende passages van zestiende noten. Je hoort fragmenten van het hoofdthema terwijl het stuk in een stroomversnelling komt en zijn hoogtepunt bereikt. Na de slotverklaring van het hoofdthema sterft de muziek weg en vertragen we ​​naarmate we korter bij het langzame middendeel komen.
De introductie van dit middendeel wordt geleid door de bugel en de altsaxofoon waarna de eerste trompet het hoofdthema speelt.  Die wordt vervolgens doorgegeven aan de euphonium voordat de muziek zich opbouwt naar het volledige orkest die de hoofdmelodie uitvoert om dit gedeelte af te sluiten.
Het slotgedeelte begint rustig met fragmenten uit de oorspronkelijke openingsthema's. Naarmate het stuk vaart krijgt, bouwt het dynamisch op naar een terugkeer van de hoofdmelodie uit het middendeel. Met veel ritmische drive komt Beyond Heaven’s Gate tot een groots einde.

Beyond Heaven’s Gates was commissioned by Derwent Brass and their Musical Director Keith Leonard to celebrate the bands 25th anniversary. Composed in three sections, the piece opens in a flourish of quaver and semiquaver rhythmic passages. You hear fragments of the main theme as the piece gathers momentum and builds to its climax at rehearsal figure H. After the final statement of the main theme, the music then dies away and slows down as we move into the slow middle movement. The introduction to this middle movement is lead by the flugel and solo horn before the solo cornet then performs the main theme. This is then passed to the euphonium before the music builds to the whole band performing the main melody to conclude this section. The finale section starts quietly with interjections from the original opening themes. As the piece gains momentum it builds in timbre and dynamic to a return of the main melody from the middle movement. With lots of rhythmic drive the piece then slows to a grand finish.
