Histoire du Tango is one of the most famous compositions by tango composer Astor Piazzolla, originally written for flute and guitar in 1986. It was Piazzolla"s life work to bring the tango from the bordellos and dance halls of Argentina into the concert halls of Europe and America. Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango is his only work for flute and guitar, the instruments associated with the first flowering of the form, in Buenos Aires in 1882. Histoire du Tango in four movements: Bordello 1900, Café 1930, Nightclub 1960 and Concert d'Aujourd'hui. Piazzolla provided program notes that expand on the individual movements: Café 1930 describes another age of the tango. Peoplle stopped dancing it as they did in 1900, perferring instead simply to listen to it. It became more musical and more romantic. This tango has undergone total transformation: the movements are slower, with new and often melancholy harmonies. Tango orchestras come to consist of two violins, two concertinas, a piano and a bass. The tango is sometimes sung as well. Luc Vertommen tried to transform the style of the music, the lush harmonies and the colours of concertina's, string instruments and a guitar as truthfull as possible in his arrangement for euphonium solo and band.

Het was Piazzolla's levenswerk om de tango van de bordelen en de danszalen naar de Europese en Amerikaanse concertzalen te brengen. Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango is zijn enige werk voor fluit en gitaar, de instrumenten waarmee de tangovorm voor het eerst werd geassocieerd in Buenos Aires in 1882. Histoire du Tango is een suite in vier delen: Bordello 1900, Café 1930, Nightclub 1960 en Concert d'Aujourd'hui. Piazzolla schreef een tekst bij ieder van de delen: Café 1930 beschrijft een nieuw tijdvak in de geschiedenis van de tango. Het publiek stopte met het dansen op de tangomuziek rond 1900 en gaven meer en meer de voorkeur om er naar te luisteren. De muziek werd daardoor muzikaler en meer romantisch. Deze tango bewijst deze totale transformatie: de delen zijn langzamer, met nieuwe en dikwijls melancholische akoorden. De tangoorkesten uit die tijd bestonden uit twee violen, twee accordeon's, piano en bas. Soms werd de tango ook gezongen. Luc Vertommen probeerde om de stijl en de sfeer van de muziek, de weelderige akkoorden en de kleur van de accordeon's, de strijkers en de gitaar zo getrouw mogelijk weer te geven in zijn bewerking voor euphoniumsolo en blaasorkest.
