Johann Sebastian Bach was 17 jaar lang (1725-1742) werkzaam als cantor (muziekdirecteur) aan de ‘St.Thomaskirche’ te Leipzig. In deze functie was hij niet alleen verantwoordelijk voor de muziek in de vier belangrijkste kerken maar ook voor de muziekopvoeding van de studenten aan de St. Thomasschool. Tijdens zijn werkzaamheden in Leipzig componeerde Bach een enorme hoeveelheid aan kerkmuziek waaronder vijf volledige cycli van meer dan 300 kerkcantates (een compositorische stunt !). de cantate ‘Wachet auf, Ruft uns die Stimme’ BMW 140 werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd op 25 november 1731. In de oorspronkelijke koraalvariatie uit deze cantate zingt de tenor de koraalmelodie. In dit nieuwe arrangement voor brassband (geïnspireerd door de symfonische versies van Granville Bantock en Leopold Stokowski) hoort U de oorspronkelijke koraalmelodie in de cornetten en trombones ; deze wordt verweven met de beroemde tegenmelodie die dit werk opent. Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor (music director) at St.Thomas’s in Leipzig for 17 years (1725-1742). Here he was responsible not only for all the music in the four main churches but also for the musical education of the pupils at St.Thomas’s School. During this time in Leipzig Bach composed an enormous quantity of church music, including five full cycles of cantata – over 300 in all (an unequalled feat of composition !). The cantata ‘Wachet auf, Ruft uns die Stimme’ (Sleepers Awake) BWV 140 was first performed on 25 November 1731. In the original chorale variation from the cantata, the theme of the chorale is sung by the tenors. In this new arrangement for brass band (inspired by the versions for symphony orchestra by Granville Bantock and Leopold Stokowski) the original chorale theme is heard on cornets and trombones, interwoven with the famous counter melody which the work opens.
