Although composer James Horner may be better known for his Academy Award-winning score to James Cameron's Titanic, he has written music for other very successful films in a variety of genres, including Star Trek II, Star Trek III, and the Ron Howard-directed, fact-based Apollo 13. Apollo 13 is one of Horner's masterpieces from 1995. The music for Ron Howard's movie Apollo 13 is patriotic but it never gets to much of the patriotic sound and mood. The first track, ‘Main Title’ starts with a snare drum, after which a lonely trumpet presents the films' main theme that recalls both the heroism and sacrifice of the Apollo astronauts. The beginning sounds almost like a psalm, before the trumpet and the whole orchestra takes over. ‘Re-entry & Splashdown’ is magnificent music. Here as well the snare drum hightens the tension and drama. Finally the main theme is presented again. The tension lets go and peace and order are restored. ‘End Titles’ starts in the original score with Annie Lennox's voice, accompanied by synthesisers and percussion. After a crescendo the orchestra and the choir takes over the entire stage in a very good rendered version of the main theme. Titanic, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall en Independence Day kreeg voor zijn partituur bij Apollo 13 een nominatie voor de Academy Awards. Het toeval wil dat zijn muziek bij Braveheart in dezelfde periode een nominatie kreeg waardoor zijn muziek bij Apollo 13 wat minder bekend werd. Horner gebruikt voor Apollo 13 naast de stem van Annie Lennox zijn gekende heroïsche thema’s met heelwat kopers die de patriotische Amerikaanse spirit moeten verklanken. Apollo 13 is een historische documentaire over de gevaren van de ruimtevaart. Het koraal in het koper illustreert de ambities van de ruimtevaart organisatie NASA. De indrukwekkende slotpassage toont de capsule die na een radio-stilte plots weer tevoorschijn komt en naar de aarde terugkeert.
