Stairway to Heaven  is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released in late 1971. It was composed by guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant for the band's untitled fourth studio album.  The song, which runs almost eight minutes, is composed of several sections, which increase in tempo and volume as the song progresses. The song begins as a slow acoustic-based folk song accompanied by recorders, before electric instrumentation is introduced. The final section is a high-tempo hard rock section highlighted by an intricate guitar solo.
The song consists of several distinct sections, beginning with a quiet introduction on a finger picked 6 string guitar and four recorders in a Renaissance music style and gradually moving into a slow electric middle section,  then a long guitar solo before the faster hard rock final section.
 
 
Stairway to Heaven is een lied van de Britse rockband Led Zeppelin. De song werd in 1971 uitgebracht en is een vaak aangehaald voorbeeld van het genre progrock.  Het intro is gebaseerd op het nummer Taurus van de Amerikaanse band Spirit, waarvan Led Zeppelin-gitarist Jimmy Page een grote bewonderaar was.
Het lied is grofweg in drie delen te verdelen en begint met een langzame sectie met ostinate bas, gespeeld op een akoestische gitaar en grotendeels bestaande uit een chromatisch dalende grote terts. Geleidelijk komt er meer tempo in het lied en wordt de chromatische bas ingeruild voor een diatonische. Ook komt het slagwerk er nu bij. In het laatste deel, dat met een gitaarsolo begint, komt er een elektrische gitaar in de mix en verandert de stijl naar hardrock.
