De film is geïnspireerd op het verhaal van Phineas Taylor Barnum, de Amerikaanse showman en circusuitbater. Barnum exploiteerde een circus dat deels het karakter van een rariteitenshow had. Hij noemde het The greatest Show on Earth. Daarmee heeft hij een groot gedeelte van zijn leven rondgereisd, ook in Europa. Na 1881 is hij gaan samenwerken met James Bailey, een samenwerking die later bekend werd als het Barnum and Bailey Circus.
