Description

Explosion is gecomponeerd voor de National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain in 2019.
Zoals de titel al doet vermoeden, is het stuk een explosie van verschillende populaire muziekstijlen: pop, dance, ballad, disco, samba en clubmuziek.
Om te beginnen nam componist Paul Lovatt-Cooper dede letters van de woorden Children’s Band als basis voor de hoofdmelodie - ChilDrEns BAnD (C, D, E, B, A, D). Deze noten vormen de basis voor het hele werk en zijn verwerkt in elke sectie en verschillende muziekstijlen doorheen het werk.
Tijdens de opening in fanfare-stijl hoor  je de achterste rij cornetten en trombones C, D, E spelen, en twee maten later de oplossing: B, A, D. Na de opening hoor je dan het hoofdthema van het werk - C, D, E, B, A, D dat zich herhaalt.

We komen dan bij een ritmische en dansachtig 7/8 ste deel. Dit tweede deel gebruikt het originele thema maar retrograad (van achter naar voren).  Daarna keert het oorspronkelijke thema terug voor een meer sereen en reflecterend langzaam gedeelte. Vervolgens bouwen we op naar de finale met fragmenten van de melodie, ontwikkeld in samba, disco en een volkslied. Dit alles bouwt op tot een herneming van het openingsthema Children’s Band dat ons naar de grote finale brengt.

Dit stuk is opgedragen ter nagedachtenis van Philip Biggs, die de beheerder was van de National Children’s Band of Great Britain.

As the title suggests the piece is an explosion of different popular musical styles – pop, dance, ballad, disco, samba and club.
For my starting point, I took the letters from the words Children’s Band as the notes for the main melody – ChilDrEns BAnD (C,D,E,B,A,D). These notes form the basis for the whole work and are incorporated in each section and varying musical styles in the work.
The fanfare style opening does exactly that when you hear the back row and trombones play C, D, E, then two bars later the resolve: B, A, D. After the opening you then hear the main theme of the piece – C, D, E, B, A, D which repeats.

We then come to a rhythmic and dance like 7/8 section. This 2nd movement uses the original theme but in retrograde (performed backwards). Following that, the original theme returns before a more serene and reflective slower section. Then our build towards the finale see’s fragments of the melody developed through samba, disco then a driving club anthems. This all builds to a recapitulation of the opening Children’s Band theme that takes the performer and listener to our grand finale close.

This piece is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend Philip Biggs, who was the Administrator of the National Children’s Band of Great Britain.
